Skin Needling

What Is Skin Needling?

Skin needling, also known as microneedling, is a minimally invasive procedure that uses fine, sterile needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin. It is used in clinical and cosmetic settings as part of a personalised treatment plan to support skin appearance where concerns such as texture changes, uneven tone, or signs of ageing may be present.

Skin needling does not involve the injection of prescription medicines. In some cases, approved topical products may be applied during or after the procedure, where clinically appropriate.

Your Consultation

All treatments begin with a one-to-one consultation with a qualified health practitioner. During this consultation, the following will be assessed:

  • Medical history
  • Skin type and skin concerns
  • Previous cosmetic or skin treatments
  • Individual goals and expectations

Based on this assessment, suitability for treatment will be determined and a personalised treatment plan may be developed. Skin needling may not be suitable for all individuals.

About the Procedure

The treatment area will be cleansed using a medical-grade cleanser to support procedural safety.

Comfort measures such as topical numbing cream may be offered, where appropriate.

A sterile skin needling device is then used to create controlled micro-channels in the skin, with treatment depth and technique adjusted according to the treatment area and clinical assessment.

Approximate appointment time: 30–60 minutes (including preparation)
Discomfort: Generally mild to moderate; a temporary scratching or prickling sensation may be experienced

Risks and Potential Risks

Skin needling carries risks and potential risks, as with any cosmetic or skin procedure.

Common and expected effects may include temporary redness, swelling, warmth, tenderness, sensitivity, pinpoint bleeding, dryness, or tightness of the skin. These effects are usually short-term and resolve within several days.

Less common risks may include prolonged redness or swelling, bruising, inflammation, infection, acne flare-ups, milia, uneven skin texture, or post-inflammatory pigment changes.

Rare but more serious risks may include scarring, delayed wound healing, persistent pigment changes, or allergic reactions to products used during or after treatment.

Recovery & Post-Treatment Care

Temporary skin reactions may occur following treatment. Post-treatment advice may include:

  • Avoiding makeup for 24 hours
  • Avoiding strenuous exercise, heat exposure, saunas, and direct sun for 24–72 hours
  • Avoiding products containing alcohol, exfoliants, retinoids, or active ingredients during the recovery period
  • Gentle cleansing and moisturising as advised
  • Daily use of broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)

A follow-up appointment may be recommended depending on individual response and treatment plan.

Treatment Areas

(Subject to individual assessment and clinical indication)
