Bio-Stimulatory Treatments Using Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA)
Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a biodegradable substance that has been used in medical applications for many years. In aesthetic practice, PLLA may be used as part of an individualised treatment plan to address areas where age-related volume changes have occurred, where clinically appropriate.
Consultations are offered to assess whether treatment using PLLA is suitable based on individual anatomy, medical history, and clinical needs.
All treatments are preceded by a comprehensive, face-to-face consultation with a qualified health practitioner. This consultation includes:
- Review of medical history
- Assessment of facial structure and skin quality
- Discussion of concerns, expectations, and potential treatment options
Suitability for treatment is determined during this consultation. Where prescription-only products are involved, treatment is provided following clinical assessment and a valid prescription, in accordance with regulatory requirements.
About the Procedure
Prior to treatment, the skin will be cleansed and prepared to support procedural safety.
Local anaesthetic may be used to support comfort.
PLLA is prepared as a suspension and may be administered beneath the skin using a cannula, where clinically indicated.
Treatment may be performed in areas discussed during consultation, such as the temples, cheeks, or jawline, depending on individual assessment.
Approximate appointment duration: 45–90 minutes, depending on treatment areas and individual needs.
Risks and potential risks
All cosmetic injectable treatments carry risks and may cause side effects or complications.
Common side effects can include redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness, pain, or temporary asymmetry at the injection site.
Less common but more serious risks may include infection, allergic reactions, nerve injury, vascular complications, tissue damage, scarring, or unsatisfactory outcomes.
A face-to-face consultation with a qualified health practitioner is required to assess individual suitability and to discuss potential risks, benefits, and alternatives.
Comfort and Aftercare
Temporary effects such as tenderness, redness, swelling, or bruising may occur following treatment.
Post-treatment care instructions will be provided and may include:
- Gentle massage of the treated areas, if advised by your practitioner
- Avoidance of strenuous exercise, heat exposure, and alcohol for 24–72 hours
- Use of a gentle cleanser and daily application of SPF 30+ sunscreen
- Avoidance of exfoliating products, retinoids, or alcohol-based skincare until advised
Follow-Up and Treatment Frequency
Changes typically develop gradually over time. Follow-up appointments may be recommended to review progress and determine whether additional treatment sessions are appropriate.
Where clinically indicated, multiple treatment sessions may be suggested and spaced several weeks apart.
All treatments are performed by a registered health practitioner, under medical supervision and prescription where required.
Important Considerations
- Not suitable for individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- A full consultation is required prior to any treatment
- Treatment outcomes and longevity vary between individuals
- Potential risks and side effects will be discussed during consultation
Potential Treatment Areas
(Subject to clinical assessment)
Areas that may be considered include:

Your practitioner will advise which areas, if any, are appropriate for treatment based on clinical assessment.
