Hair Restoration

What Is Skin Needling for Hair Restoration?

Skin needling, also known as microneedling, is a minimally invasive procedure that uses fine, sterile needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin. When performed on the scalp, skin needling may be used as part of a personalised clinical treatment plan to support scalp health and hair appearance, where clinically appropriate.

In some cases, skin needling may be performed in conjunction with exosome-based products that are applied topically during or after the procedure. These products are used to complement the treatment approach and do not involve the injection of prescription medicines. Suitability for combined treatment is determined following clinical assessment.

Skin needling for hair restoration does not involve the injection of prescription medicines. In some cases, approved topical products may be applied during or after the procedure, based on individual assessment and clinical judgement.

Your Consultation

All treatments begin with a one-to-one consultation with a qualified health practitioner. During this consultation, the following will be assessed:

  • Medical history and current medications
  • Scalp condition and pattern of hair concerns
  • Previous hair or cosmetic treatments
  • Individual goals and expectations

Based on this assessment, suitability for treatment will be determined and a personalised treatment plan may be developed. Skin needling for hair restoration may not be suitable for all individuals.

About the Procedure

  • The scalp is cleansed using a medical-grade cleanser to support procedural safety
  • Comfort measures such as topical numbing cream may be offered where appropriate
  • A sterile skin needling device is used to create controlled micro-channels in the scalp, with treatment depth and technique adjusted according to the treatment area and clinical assessment

Approximate appointment time: 30–60 minutes (including preparation)
Discomfort: Generally mild to moderate; temporary scratching, pressure, or prickling sensations may be experienced

Common and expected effects may include:

  • Temporary redness, swelling, warmth, or tenderness of the scalp

These effects are usually short-term and resolve within several days.

Less common risks may include:

  • Prolonged redness or swelling
  • Bruising or inflammation

  • Folliculitis or acne-like eruptions on the scalp
  • Uneven skin texture

Rare but more serious risks may include:

  • Scarring
  • Delayed healing
  • Persistent skin changes
  • Allergic reactions to products used during or after treatment

Individual risk varies and will be discussed during your consultation.

Recovery & Post-Treatment Care

Temporary scalp reactions may occur following treatment. Post-treatment advice may include:

  • Avoiding washing the scalp for 24 hours
  • Avoiding strenuous exercise, heat exposure, saunas, and direct sun for 24–72 hours
  • Avoiding harsh hair products or active topical ingredients during the recovery period
  • Gentle cleansing and scalp care as advised
  • Daily sun protection where the scalp is exposed

A follow-up appointment may be recommended depending on individual response and treatment plan.

Treatment Areas

(Subject to individual assessment and clinical indication)

  • Scalp areas affected by hair thinning or hair density concerns

Treatment Frequency

Response to skin needling for hair restoration varies between individuals. A series of treatments may be recommended, spaced several weeks apart, depending on scalp condition and clinical assessment. Maintenance treatments may be considered as part of an ongoing management plan.
